BLOOD

Lost Sky

LOST SKY is BLOOD's final release, marking the end of eight years of activity. With sixteen tracks, it's a full album, though only six of the those are original songs, while the rest of the CD is comprised of remixes by various artists. It's a little disappointing that the album itself is so short, however, LOST SKY delivers BLOOD's goodbye to music, as well as a showcase of outside talent to fill the void they leave behind.

The album begins with it's namesake: Lost Sky features Kiwamu's signature guitar sound paired with an electronic edge. Fu-ki's voice flows smoothly through the song, making it complete and easy to listen to. Captured follows, with a more goth-industrial sound crafted with a mixture of heavy guitar and a fairly dancable beat.

Nothing steps up the pace, though it feels almost monotonous, like a steady assault to the ear. The wailing guitar that weaves itself throughout the song provides some needed variety, and a lovely piano melody acts as a reprise about two-thirds of the way in. Nothing transitions seamlessly into Absolute, a similar song, but with a more noticably industrial sound. Heavy but understated guitar brings color to the electronic elements of Absolute, with Fu-ki's voice filtering in for the final touch.

Oroboro stands out with an undercurrent of suspense throughout the song, from a combination of Fu-ki's haunting voice, equally haunting keyboards, and a more rock-y guitar. Oroboro is the final song to feature Fu-ki's vocals, as The End, the final original song on the album, is a short instrumental. The End is a somewhat abrupt ending, but it brings BLOOD's signature sound to the table to punctuate the last of their musical creations, before filling the rest of the album with remixes.

The next seven tracks are remixes of Lost Sky, done by various artists--all seven essentially the same song, but each one with a different twist. While not everyone will be satisfied to hear so many versions of one song, it's hard to ignore the creative differences between each version. From Noir du'Soliel's distant and spacey remix, to Spectrum-X's hauntingly elegant remix, to echostream's unforgettable Broken Lullaby remix, each artist brings something unique to the table. Crimson (Tragic Black remix), BLOOD (Uninvited Guest remix), and D.T.M.H. (Virgins O.R. Pigeons remix) round out LOST SKY's remix roster, bringing back some of BLOOD's less recent work in their final album.

LOST SKY is BLOOD's final contribution to the musical world, but it's debatable if it makes for a satisfactory goodbye album. With only six original songs, and a truckload of remixes, it can feel a little lacking. Then again, goodbyes aren't always easy, and sometimes the best ending is not the one expected.
